Monday, June 15th, 1964: BSBL News: First-Year Player Draft
It's draft day! And Long Beach, San Antonio, San Bernardino, El Paso and San Jose will have the first five selections.
As GMs prepare their final notes on the 1964 rookie class, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over Big Sky Baseball. So many teams have their futures vested in today's proceedings. Some will go all out for the hot pick, while others will be content to take a mid-carder or dark horse. Only Father Time knows if things will work out. One way or the other, it's an unsettling thought for GM's whose jobs could hang in the balance. The top ten picks, as rated by BNN, are:

1. Artie Manwaring, 21 year-old right fielder out of college.
2. Tony Vásquez, 22 year-old second baseman out of college.
3. Jared Hughes, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school.
4. Jon Frye, 23 year-old center fielder out of college.
5. Lúcio Martínez, 18 year-old catcher out of high-school.
6. Duane Wright, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
7. Kent Gordon, 21 year-old first baseman out of college.
8. David Wilson, 22 year-old catcher out of college.
9. Willis Jenkins, 17 year-old second baseman out of high-school.
10. Dusty O'Lehan, 19 year-old first baseman out of high-school.
Monday, June 15th, 1964: Atwood Chosen #1 Player
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Fred Atwood, the Portland left fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week honors.

Atwood piled up 15 hits in 30 at-bats, 3 home runs and 13 RBIs while hitting .500.

This year Atwood is hitting .357 with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs to his credit. He has gotten on base at a .462 clip and scored 53 runs.
Monday, June 15th, 1964: PL Star of the Week Announced
One of the league's most exciting young players, Dave Smith of the Houston Lone Stars earned himself Pioneer League Player of the Week honors with a standout performance in last week's games.

For the week the 24-year-old left fielder had a lofty .600 average (12-20), collecting no home runs, 1 RBIs and 4 runs scored.

This season Smith is batting .332 with 62 hits, 3 home runs, 26 RBIs, .417 OBP and has scored 31 runs.
